NEPRA Project, Nepal
The NEPRA project established a leprosy hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal in 1989. The goal was more than just to cure the patients, but also to give them new opportunities. As leprosy is still viewed as a social stigma in many nations, this opportunity included re-integrating the patients into the community.
NEPRA, working with its Nepalese partner, the New SADLE project, and with generous donations, was able to open textile workshops that brought together those suffering from leprosy and the healthy to weave fine cashmere, wool and pashmina yarns. All are paid fair wages, receive free health care for their entire families, as well as education and day care for their children.
hessnatur not only purchases handmade products from these workshops, but also supports the NEPRA/New SADLE project by introducing toxin-free dyeing and production processes as well as consulting in textile production. Our involvement has created many new jobs and contributed to a healthy environment for all workers.
