Our fibers

Cotton
The finest cotton is incredibly soft, absorbent, breathable, durable and easy-care. Our cotton is all that, and more. Our pure cotton clothes are organic. 100% organic. It isn’t sprayed with pesticides and insecticides. It doesn’t contaminate the groundwater and drinking water where it was grown. It doesn’t harm the people who grew it. Our cotton is actually kind.

Linen
Nothing says summer like linen. It’s cool and fresh, it’s crisp and wicks away moisture. That describes all linen. But, our linen is even finer. 20% of our linen is organic, grown without harmful chemicals. We are working to increase this amount, which is why we started growing our own organic linen in Hesse, Germany, in 2005. But even our linen that isn’t organic is still completely pure and natural, because we use the same strict manufacturing guidelines as we do for organic: no toxins, no harmful substances.

Hemp
Hemp is a remarkable fiber: strong, durable with a superior ability to absorb moisture. Yet, it’s utterly soft, gentle and naturally pure.

Wool
Wool is as basic to a wardrobe as cotton. Treasured for its warmth and softness. But when you wear our wool, you’ll discover a new standard in comfort. All of our wool is natural and, currently, 20% is organic. Our wool baby clothes and lingerie are all 100% organic. Organic wool comes from sheep that have been cared for and fed under strict regulations, without any pesticides, hormones or antibiotics (except in extreme illness). Since organic wool is not chemically stripped of its natural oil, it’s particularly healthy for sensitive skin, and actually stays cleaner.

Luxury Fibers: Alpaca, Cashmere, Mohair, Camel Hair
Alpaca, Cashmere, Mohair and Camel Hair are the finest, silkiest fibers. Warm and lightweight, the fibers come from the hair of free-roaming animals. These luxurious fibers, in their purest form, are only available in small amounts.

Yak – a world first
Yak herds roam the mountains of Mongolia, where their winter fur protects them from frigid temperatures. Once a year their soft, fine hair is combed out by hand. We then turn it into beautiful yarns in the animal’s natural colors (black/brown/beige), exclusively for hessnatur. These luxurious, cashmere-like knits are rare, pure and only available at hessnatur.

Silk
Silk, known for its luster and sensuality, is one of the most desired fibers. But ours is even more so. More than 50% of our silk clothing is made from organic silk; 100% of the silk used in our baby clothing and our lingerie is organic. Untreated, organic silk is not only the highest quality silk you’ll ever wear, it’s also believed to have healing, anti-inflammatory benefits, making it ideal for sensitive skin. Organic silk is extremely rare. Ours comes from the only organic silk farm in the world, the SABA project in China. The difference between organic and conventional silk is determined by the silkworms’ diet. With organic silk, the mulberry trees they feed on are grown organically, without pesticides or fertilizers. This means the silkworms are healthier, so they produce longer threads. The longer the threads, the finer the silk.
